The attitude and character of each individual and the dynamics that exist when they interact as a group will determine much of the tone of the course. Unknowns such as weather, terrain, and even the activities in which the student will engage also add so much dimension to the overall course. The bottom line is that each teen summer program will provide a unique and personalized experience for every student. Each teen summer program begins at the base camp located nearest the course location. There, the students meet each other and their instructors, are issued necessary gear for the activity and begin learning important skills that they will use on their journey. Each student is responsible to bring only shoes and clothes specific to the requirement of the activity. Typically all other gear and food will be provided for each student. From the base camp the students head directly to the field where they begin one of the best experiences of their lives. While on course, there is a good chance that each student will have a chance to lead the group in an activity. This opportunity allows the student to discover his or her own leadership style and begin to develop those abilities. This is an accelerated time of self-discovery, uncovering character traits and attributes that can begin to be developed and can provide a foundation of confidence for the future. Another facet that has become standard on all Outward Bound Wilderness courses is the solo opportunity. At the discretion of the instructor, each student will have a chance to spend time on their own for anywhere from a couple hours to overnight. Though the students will not be far from the instructors or other member of the group, this opportunity provides an invaluable time for self-reflection. Finally, if time and circumstance allow, the students will plan and execute a group service project. This tends to round out the whole experience and allows the students to give back to their community and environment.
